(Last Updated On: February 26, 2022)

As the ferry harbors into this beautiful coastal town, you won’t be able to stop yourself from being mesmerized by everything it is made of – colorful houses all lined up neatly down the cliff, beach dotted with signature orange-colored and a number of sailboats all around. Walk around and you will be able to enjoy some lovely coastal views on a sun-kissed beach, with many restaurants, cafes, gelato shops within the proximity of the beach. For sure, the moment you step into Positano, you would realize that you have entered a paradise! Are you looking for ideas on accommodation, site seeing tips, and ways to save money during your travel in Positano? Look no further as we provide useful tips on exploring this beautiful coastal town for an itinerary of 2 days in Positano.

Legend has it that the town got its name when the pirates were transporting the stolen icon across the Mediterranean and a storm made them unload it in this small fishing village when they heard a voice “Posa, posa!” (“Put it down, put it down!”) aboard.

Positano is definitely an expensive place and no wonder there are many fashionable retailers, boutiques, and art dealers selling out-of-reach paintings and artworks. The colorful houses, steep alleyways, grottos, and blue waters are very unique to Positano and the easy accessibility would make this town one of the must-visit and the prettiest destinations along the Amalfi coast.

2 days in Positano:

How to get there:

As accommodation is quite expensive, many tourists decide to do a quick day tour to Positano from Capri or Salerno. For the ferry schedules, check the schedules online but book the tickets directly from the operator (SNAV, caremar, etc…) as the ferry aggregator website would charge a huge booking fee. We couldn’t book a ferry ticket online as there wasn’t an option available. Since we were taking a ferry from Carpi to Positano, we made sure to book tickets at the counter as soon as we reached Capri. The ticket cost would be approximately 20 euros per person.

Also while booking, make sure that luggage is included (or charged) so that your ferry trip is smooth and there would be no surprises.

Where to stay:

Expect the prices to be really high as this small town is a favorite holiday destination on the Amalfi coast. Airbnb and regular hotels are generally quite expensive owing to the fact that the houses are built on the cliffs with excellent views and accessibility are usually via taxis or buses if you are carrying luggage. One thing to watch out for is the method to reach your accommodation. As soon as you arrive in the town by ferry, you will be welcomed by porters waiting to haul your luggage to your hotel or Airbnb. They charge around 10 euros to drop the luggage at the hotel and they carry the cases using a vehicle resembling a golf cart.

Gotchas:

If you are booking through Airbnb, make sure that the host gives you proper directions and landmarks to reach the place as google maps are not very helpful over here. Also, not all porters might know where the apartment is so be really careful about booking an apartment that is a bit inside. Porters are generally more familiar with the hotel names. If you are booking a hotel, they might provide shuttle services but this really depends on the hotel.

From the beachfront, the only way to reach the nearest taxi station or bus stop is by a 15-minute hike through narrow alleyways surrounded by boutique shops, cafes, and grocery stores. As soon as you alight from the ferry, look right towards the church and walk towards it. You will see signs for taxi/bus stop and from there on, a short hike accompanied by some huffing and puffing would take you to the taxi/bus stop.

In our case, we had booked our accommodation through Airbnb and the porters did not know the place at all. We asked them to drop off the luggage at the taxi stand and we walked up there. Finally, we managed to get in touch with the host and they provided clearer directions which helped the taxi driver to spot the place.

Things to do:

Shopping and eating:

Positano attracts many tourists throughout the year and is famous for art galleries, ceramic shops, casual clothing stores and you will see a mix of top-end and local clothing stores in the town center. There are many restaurants lined up along the beach that offer delicious food. We personally liked the pizza from the restaurant “La Pergola”. Also try Limoncello, lemon candies while at Positano.

Grottos:

During your 2 days in Positano, you can visit white grotto, green grotto, or the emerald grotto on a private boat tour.

Day trips:

There are many options for day tours if you are staying at Positano and would like to explore a bit further. Capri, for those that can’t get enough of blue waters, ruins of Pompeii and Mt. Vesuvius, for those history buffs, Sorrento, for shopaholics, Naples, for the love of Pizza and gelatos.!

However, Positano is the perfect destination to just take a break, stroll along the beach, click numerous photos of the gorgeous vistas, eat pizza on the beach, watch the sunset with your loved ones and let the time slowly go by. We wouldn’t take day trips during our 2 days in Positano, as this town is just too gorgeous.
